Mattie Edwards Hewitt and Richard Averill Smith photographs, ca. 1920-1951.

This collection contains photographs of various estates and gardens in Massachusetts, taken by photographer Mattie Edwards Hewitt, a specialist in landscape architecture photography, and her nephew, architectural photographer Richard Averill Smith. Most of the photographs were taken by Hewitt between ca. 1920-1931; Smith's photographs were taken between 1928-1951. Although many Massachusetts estates are depicted, there are an especially large number of photographs taken by Hewitt of Richard T. Crane, Jr.'s estate, "Castle Hill," in Ipswich, mass. Many of the photographs are duplicate prints made by Hewitt and Smith. The collection also contains some portraits of the homeowners and their families; letters from homeowners to the photographers; and hand-written notes about the photographs and the magazines in which they appeared.

629 photographs in 2 boxes and 1 narrow box.
